Martin / Long Family History
Jim was born to John Robert Martin, Sr. and Grace Marie Martin(Long), on January 15, 1956 in
Flint, Michigan. I am the Michigander. The rest of the family, including my parents, were born in
Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
My siblings are in descending chronological order, John R. Jr. (Jack), Francis George
(Fritz/Frank), Carl Henry, and Mary Grace.
This is a photo of(from left to right) Carl, Grandfather Martin, Fritz, Mary Grace, Jack, and Grace Martin in the background.
My parents moved from Wilkes-Barre to Davison, Michigan in 1950 for employment
opportunities. It was a rough struggle, from the poverty of a mined out coal town, to the relative
prosperity of an emerging automobile town;
Flint, Michigan.  In all irony, the tide has turned and
Flint is now a struggling automobile town.
My father was a "Jack(figuratively and literally) of all trades" and had worked doing everything
from welding in the shipyards of New Jersey during WW II, to fixing the worlds largest shovel
for the
Blue Coal Company, in Pennsylvania.
Jack Martin
Jack(Hoot), with the assistance of Wilburt and Margaret Zirnhelt, who were life long family
friends also from Wilkes-Barre, was able to secure employment with
Buick Motor Division of
General Motors. Initially, my family lived on the Zirnhelt's land in Davison, in a small trailer.
How four children and two adults fit into that little trailer is beyond me.

Eventually my parents were able to afford a small house, about a mile south of the Zirnhelt's, at
4315 South State Road. From what I have been told, that first house was quite small, without
running water, and no basement. This small first house was soon to be no more, when on May
12 of 1956, a
tornado ripped through the area south of Davison and destroyed our house. Since
there was no basement in the house, we made it over to our next door neighbors, the Tatro's,
just before the tornado hit. I was all of four months old, and have no conscious memory of this,
only what I have been told. Needless to say, we were once again without a real home. Davison,
at the time, was a small farming community, and our family had become acquainted through
our church with the Spezia family. The Spezia's had a farm on Atlas Road, which had a small
tenant farmer's house on it. We were able to live there while my family built a new house
where the old house once stood.
My father and brothers built the house together, and that is where my mother and I stayed until
three years or so after my father's death in 1977. As they say, the rest is history.
The House
My father's parents, the Martins, were born in Lancashire County, Rochdale England. James T.
Martin, my grandfather, for whom I am named, once stated, " I am a Scotsman, who had the
misfortune of having been born in England." He moved, in the early 1900's to the U.S., settling
in Wilkes-Barre. His wife, Alice Horsfield, died when my father was quite young.
Alice Horsfield Martin & James T. Martin I
My grandfather re-married after her death, resulting in my father having several siblings and
step siblings. The Martin family remains a mystery to me, as I only knew two of my fathers
many siblings, Aunt Jennie and Aunt Ann Waters.  Ann recently passed away at age 94.
Grandfather Martin apparently married the mother of a boy he had saved from drowning. The
boy, George Heale, had fallen through the
ice of a pond outside of the textile mill where James
worked. He noticed the boy go through the ice and leaped down to the pond, rescuing him from
the frozen water on January 27th, 1908. As the result of James heroic efforts, he was awarded
the Carnegie Medal through the
Carnegie Hero Fund, and one thousand dollars. With that
money he was able to purchase the house where my father was raised, on 15 Linden Street in
Wilkes-Barre.

Information, from Aunt Annie Waters(Martin) reveals the names of my father's many other siblings and step siblings: Selena and Doris
Martin, both born in England, Nellie Martin Forsey, Charles Thomas Martin, William Martin, George R. Martin, and Frank Martin. Step
siblings include: John Heale, Mable Heale Jones, Marion Heale, Alice Heale Sammon,  and George Heale.
Information, from a genealogy listserv on Lancashire County, revealed the names and birth places of my great grandparents on the Martin
side:

John Martin, my father's name sake, was born in 1833 in Haddington, Scotland. His wife, Ellen
Crosley, was born in 1837 in Linlithgow, Scotland. My grandfather apparently had one brother
living with them at the time of the census named John as well. He was born in 1865, in
Edinburgh, Scotland.
This information may also have shed some light on my Grandmother, Alice Horsfield:

My mother's family, the Longs, were also from Wilkes-Barre. Her father, Charles
Long,(Lang or "Lange", the German for Long) was a painter, both of buildings and
artistically. Grandfather Long's family were originally from
Bavaria in the south of
Germany. His father, John C. Lang, came from the town of
Oberammergau, near the
Austrian border. He died September 5, 1913. John married Anna Marie Konig, who
was born September 21, 1846 in
Eichstätt (formerly also Eichstädt or Aichstädt),
Bavaria.  She died January 6, 1926. They were married April 27th, 1873 by Fr. Nagel,
as witnessed by Andrew Lang and Frank Rothenbecker. The Langs lived at 47 North
Grant Street, in Wilkes-Barre. They had at least 8 children, although possibly as many
as 11. Their names were: George, Jacob, Frank, John, Bertha, Magdelena, Mary,
and Charles(Grandpa Long). Charles was also known as Karl Lang, and Charlie.
(Apparently, during or after WW I, Americans of German descent were "encouraged"
to anglicize their names, hence the change from Lang to Long.) Charles was born
January 29th, 1884 in Wilkes-Barre. He was baptized February 23, 1884, and died on
October 29th, 1941. Grandpa Long was called the "Man with the Golden Hands" in
his obituary because of his artistry. He married Elizabeth Dietrich on March 6, 1910 at
St. Nick's Catholic Church, in Wilkes-Barre. Witnesses were Francis and Bertha
Sauer(probably Bertha Long).
Charles and Elizabeth Long(Dietrich)
Grandma Long(Elizabeth Dietrich), was also of German, Catholic descent, with Welch
ancestry as well. The Dietrich family, however, had been in this country much longer.
My mother talked about having a great uncle in the Civil War. Her Grandfather, George
J. Dietrich was born June 5th, 1854, and died December 15th, 1936. He married Cecelia
Byrd, who was born in Wales. They lived at 3 S. Wilkes Street, in Wilkes-Barre, and
had 4 girls: Elizabeth Marie(Grandma), Rose, Gertrude, and Grace. Grandma
Long(Dietrich) was born January 31, 1890, and died September 17, 1960. She is buried
in St. Mary's Cemetery, in Wilkes-Barre. She visited Michigan in the late 1950's, giving
me a teddy bear and a train set for Christmas.
Grandma Long(Dietrich) and Jimmy
My mother was one of ten children; Regina(Jean), Elizabeth(Betty), Grace(my
mother), Walburga(Wally), Gertude(Gerty), Irene(Renie), Carl, George, Henry, and
Joseph. Of the ten, only Aunt Renie is living, in Waldorf, Maryland. When I was young,
we visited Pennsylvania nearly every summer.

New information from cousin Bob Ott regarding the Dietrich Family
is at the bottom of this page.

This is a work in progress, and I hope to discover additional information and have
corrections to current information as I continue. Eventually I would like to do a
complete genealogy of the family. I am particularly interested in the Lang family
history in Bavaria.

Anna M. Waters, 94, of Marshfield, died Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at Saint Joseph's Hospital.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 12, at the First Presbyterian Church in
Marshfield. The Rev Scott Marrese-Wheeler will officiate.

Anna Martin Waters was born March 11, 1913, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., to James T. and Alice (Horsfield)
Martin.

Anna graduated from high school in Wilkes-Barre and studied nursing at the Methodist Hospital School
of Nursing in Brooklyn, N.Y. She graduated with a nursing degree in 1934.

On July 17, 1934, the former Anna Martin was married to Dr. Henry Scott Waters in Wilkes-Barre. The
couple left immediately for the Philippines where Dr. Waters became director of the Iloilo Mission
Hospital on the island of Panay, run by the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society. Anna and Dr.
Waters served in the Philippines for 15 years. They and their children were held in Japanese internment
camps there from 1942-45. Dr. and Mrs. Waters returned to the Philippines for two and a half years
following the war. In 1959, they moved to the Marshfield area and Dr. Waters opened his private
practice at the Doege Clinic and later the Colby Clinic. Anna took a position with the Marshfield Public
Library where she was employed for some ten years.

Anna was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Marshfield and the Marshfield PEO. She was an
avid reader and also got much enjoyment from knitting.

Mrs. Waters is survived by her children, Dr. William (Laana) Waters of Alameda, Calif., and Mary-
Alice Waters of New York, N.Y. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Morgan and Adam
Waters, both of Sacramento, Calif.

Her parents, husband, one son and ten brothers and sisters preceded Mrs. Waters in death.

* - could possibly be children of Elizabeth, probably not, as
Ignatz and Elizabeth are listed in 1860 Census as having been
married within the year.

George J Dietrich married:
Cecelia Bird (according to the 1900 Census, spelling is Secillian).
Elizabeth Marie (Grandma Long) b: 01/31/1890 d: 09/17/1960
Rose b:~ Aug, 1890
Gertrude b:~ Mar, 1893
Grace b:~ Nov, 1893

Birth dates for Rose, Gertrude, and Grace are from the 1900
Census. They seem awful close together, though.

Also, I have a Christening record for Ignatius Dieterich for
February 2, 1812 in Oos, Baden, Germany. Parents were Michael
Dieterich and Anna Maria Zillioxin. I don't have any evidence
that this is the same Ignatz Dietrick, but the facts seem to fit.

Through all the Census records, there are several different
spellings for Dietrich.  As Ignatz is listed as not being able to
read or write, any of them could be correct.
